Default engine or gearbox noise

ok i am new and only had my 1998 galant 2.5 a week and its making a noise , when pulling off in 1st gear it sounds like a dry rumbling sound coming from the engine , has i depress the clutch it stopes then into 2nd and the dry rumbling startes again once into 5th its silent but if i hit the gas i can hear it again but not has loud.
please don`t say its going to cost lots of money

Thanks i have checked the engine oil and thats fine and will take it a garage tomorrow and get the gearbox oil checked, is it worth replacing the gearbox oil with some kind of special oil ?

ianstoke - mine does the same thing. I haven't worked out yet what it is. I changed the gearbox oil, but no change. I am thinking it is either the gearbox input shaft or clutch release bearing. I am hoping the release bearing, 'cause it will be much more simple to fix!!

NICK- i took mine a garage today he had a test drive and said it sounds like the needle bearings in the gearbox and that i would need a new gearbox, i thought of having to gearbox fluid drained, adding fully synthetic and molyslip G but if that does not at least quite it down a little then then i would not think its the gearbox and go along with your idea thats its a clutch problem. let me know if you get yours sorted out cause that noise is driving me mad. ian

Will do. But I'm hoping I won't have to for a while - no funds available for a few months!
