P0302 Troubleshooting
I am getting a p0302 code on my 2001 Galant. I know that is a misfire in cylinder 2 but I want to make sure I don't spend more money on this problem than I need to.
I replaced the spark plugs and I am still having the misfire problem. I replaced the wires about 2 years ago and after checking them they seem to be fine. The next thing I can think is the problem is the ignition coil that is attached to the cylinder 2 plug.
Is there any way of testing the coil before I go buy a new one? Also is it possible that there is a different problem all together?

common code for that model galant. usually the tube seals leak and oil gets into the spark plug holes. ruins the plugs, wires, and coil boots. when u replaced the spark plugs was there oil in the tube?? if there was your going to have to remove the valve cover and replace the tube seals. also replace the valve cover gasket while your there. oil contamination will make the plug wires and coils boots misfire causeing that code or other misfire codes p0301,p0303 &p0304. dont see too many coils go bad, but it does happen. 95% of the time the coil boot is the culprit. either goes bad or oil contamination as previously stated. coil boots are available seperatly. dont have to replace the coil to get the boot.

Yeah actually there was a lot of oil in there. I knew I was going to have to end up fixing the seals but I was waiting to see how bad the leak really was since the plugs had been in there for a couple of years.
I will fix those seals today and see how it goes.

I fixed my problem. It turns out that it was actually the ignition coil. The way I came up with the answer was by switching the coil and boot from 2 to 4 and checked the CEL code and it was P0304 (misfire in 4). So then I switched the coil back to 2 but left the boot in 4 and then read the CEL code, P0302. I replaced the coil and the car runs fine.
I did go ahead and change out the valve cover gasket and tube seals and it sucked! My valve cover was stuck on and I had to take a screw driver and hammer to break the seal. Then the old gasket was stuck on the valve cover pretty good and it took me about 3 hours to get it out and then scrape off all the extra rubber that was stuck in the grooves.
I conquered my car today. Tomorrow I start working on my wife's Kia. Yuck
