Guys - I am new to the Galant club.
After waiting patiently for years - I've just got a 2.5 V6 Elegance. I love it.
Anyway, I had a similar problem with the idle speed on my previous car(don't ask), it eneded up being the idle valve.
Soundls like a pretty generic component so perhaps that's your problem also.

The problem was thatthe throttle body needed a good cleaning. For anyone else having this problem, this is what I did:
I just used some the the throttle body cleaner from the auto parts store. It needs to say (on the can) it is safe with oxygen sensors. Took off the air intake. I sprayed it on a rag and clean all the carbon deposits. Do not let anything fall in the two holes at the bottom of throttle body. Now I have a smooth idle.
