I bought an 01 MS a couple of weeks ago and the radio said CODE so I wasn't able to listen to it during the test drive. When I got it working, the sound was kinda staticy so I took it out to see if there were any loose wires. The wire harness and antenna wires were connected and also this wire:

It was connected to the back of the radio but the other end was connected to ..... nothing. HOWEVER, when I unplugged it and put the radio back in, it wouldn't even turn on. So I plugged it back in and tried to find where the other end should go but couldn't find anything. After hours of cussing and trying anything, I plugged it back in and happen to just touch the other end to some metal and it came back on. I really don't think this is how it is supposed to work so where is the other end of this cord supposed to go? And why won't the radio work without it?

all that time and effort you did just to get no where, where that time spent you could've already put a cheap aftermarket stereo. the cheapest stereo out there at your local bestbuy would be much better in every single way. but ive grown to accept that there are many people who waste a lot of time just to figure out how to put back that underpowered weak stock stereo that does not even have aux inputs (although some stock mitsu stereos did) the lack of being able to play even cds burned with mp3s just feels so historic.

anyways to answer your question, so you didn't think i was attacking you

that cable may be the proprietary 6-pin din cable found in many mitsus from mid to early 00s. it usually is connected to the external amp. if your vehicle shows sign of the inifinity upgraded system then that is just that. the thing with a lot of mitsus are the stereos are wired parallel and even if its not hooked up if the main harness is plugged in that is where the parallel wiring of the speakers are at and the stereo should still work, but sometimes lack the extra dash speakers/tweeters because the xover is built into the stock amp and with that not working you lose those and the deck not the amp is powering the speakers.

however, if there is a cd changer somewhere in the car, i know the mitsu plug also looks similar. but yea if its 6 pin then its prob the amp.

I dont need anything fancy. I just wanted it to sound decent. This car doesnt have a CD changer or an infinity amp or anything. So I guess I just need to plug in the cord to the radio and tape the other end to some metal? Apparently before it was just resting on some metal somehow without falling off and turning the radio off. I still dont understand why it won't work with it NOT plugged in.

 

Hello, I can tell you that one side of the wire goes to the stereo and the other side goes to the antenna as far as the code goes. U call Mitsubishi and give them the VIN. code and they will give you the code as long as you have the info they will give it to you. IF you got the manual with the vehicle there should be a code card inside too. I also wrote mine form the card onto the manual. If you ever have to disconnect he battery you will have to rest the code again. good luck.
