Jim thank you for the info. This is indeed a reputable shop. i did y home work as i was nervous about this.
I need to do a complete tune up while this is all opened up.
I want to do plugs/wires/air filter/gaskets lower and upper/ new belt/tensioner/water pump/ crankshaft pully( i had a mishap when trying to take it off so its going to require a new one).

Absolutely agree on new timing belt tensioner and idler pulley. I'm also pretty sure that you will need new head bolts. This is called for in most if not all engine rebuild procedures. However, I disagree with Benckj about the need for new lifters. If you had lifter slap noise - yes, replace them (at least the ones that are bad). If, on the other hand, you had no issues - why add another couple hundred to a rebuild by replacing something that is not broken? I'd rather make sure to spend the $$ on valves and valve guides since that's where the damage is.

Agreed. Only reason I mentioned lifters is because of the valve damage. Worth checking to ensure they are true.

I stayed up all night for 2 days to complete pulling it all apart to take it in.

So the shop said 800 for everything including parts, and it would be done by this coming Wednesday which is good as i need it asap.

I am in a hurry to get it rebuilt so i can take it to my in laws cabin for Christmas. Its up on Mount-Hood Oregon. And has been having treacherous whiteout weather conditions since last week so there will be a lot of snow to go through.

I am going to replace all above mentioned parts as well. I would be so devastated if at this point it where to happen again due to a part not being replaced....

Auto zone here has a engine rebuild kit with all seals and gaskets. They also have the kit for the belt, tensioner, water pump and rest of parts.

When all is said and done it would have costed me about the same as buying a junk yard engine however i will have a nicely rebuilt 3.5 that is the original engine and not some junk yard gamble.

Good job, hope it all works out and is dependable enough to take off road. Are you doing both heads?

argh when it rains it pours. I am having more issues and could use some more help.
So I got all the parts and got the heads back but I cannot get the camshaft sensor to fit back into place!! There is about an inch of free space and in not about to wrench it tight. There are no gaskets/seals that will fill that inch of space.
I am thinking it may have gotten machined wrong or something may have slipped? I can't get a hold of them until tommorow morning to ask them about it.
But was hoping it's just something I'm over looking.

Could use some more advice.
Thanks guys.

First of all - the bottom of the heads look absolutely awesome .
Now to the cam sensor. Two possibilities:
1. The sensor is not properly aligned with the cam. Take sensor out and check to make sure the mating parts point in the same orientation. It is possible that one of them is rotated 180 degrees and thus not engaging.
2. Second possibility (and I might be wrong here) the left and right cam shafts might be different and you have them installed on opposite heads.

Was able to move the cam a little bit by pushing in on the end of the shaft. It properly aligned it and the sensor fell into place with no resistance. Thanks HunterD. Lol moving onward with reinstall now.

Yes I agree he did an exentlent job redoing the heads, and was very **** about doing so and took him 2 extra days but he made sure everything was perfect. I am happy with the work done and the price only came to 600.

He resurfaced the rest of the heads on both sides said the lifters were good and resurfaced the valves and replaced the 4 that caused the damage.

I'm sure there's more I am forgetting right now because I am brain dead been working on this project a lot.

So far not to bad of cost for repair of original engine much better than trying to get a junk yard engine and gambling on it.

And what's best about this project is its been a grand father/father/son project were we have been spending time together as a family under the hood of a 3 gen Montero . I can't think of any better place to spend time.

Oh before I forget I wanted to ask you about your name D.
Is it from an anime??

Jp

Nice job.

What brand gaskets, timing belt, tensioner, etc are you using and where are you getting them from?
