Replaced the Freewheel Clutch Valve and it fixed the grinding noise. See the post https://mitsubishiforum.com/forum/sh...ad.php?t=37680 for more details, and thanks to all here for your inputs.

I seem to be having the same problem, based on the initial description. My mech says it is the differential. Could this be a side efect of the solenoid going bad?
Allthough the grinding noise only occurs while Im driving and it stops only with a "tunk" like noise when I come to a full stop.

Only difference between yours and mine seems to be that you're saying yours does it the entire time, where as mine was intermittant. I'd find it unlikely that it's the differential, theses things are built like tanks. May want to test the solenoid packs or the freewheel valve's first before dropping differential $$

Well, I wouldn't quite call a Montero a "built like a tank" vehicle, specially considering the front diff mechanism, since it's a little complex in design -- compared to other Japanese imports.

The solenoids were fine, had to replace and fix some of the internal front diff gearing; although, there was a faulty conection to the solenoid pack, which caused wearing of the coupling and so on...

Bought that car used...

I had the same griding noise coming from the front end of my Montero. It always occurred in 2H. After reading this thread, as a diagnostic step I put the car in AWD mode (4H) and the noise did not re-occur. This confirmed the freewheel valve solenoid malfunction. Replaced it (it is about $100 now) and the noise went away. Thanks for the help with diagnosis.

Gentlemen, if you need to change the wheel hub assemblies, you can get it looking for the timken part number: HA590039 Rear; HA590145 Front, for Montero 2001 to 2005. It costs aprox. USD 140.00 each. I changed it in my Montero 2002 3.5V6 Gls., about a year ago.

Default Yes, that was it

We took the advise about the solonoid and it worked! I went online and found the part from a Chinese company for $16.00 including shipping. I learned that the Montero is known as the 'Pajero' and the part is called a 'super select'. I would have spent tons of time finding the issue and tons of money trying to get it fixed.
I want to thank you for your insight and for sharing your knowledge.

Thanks man! i was having the same issue, swapped the solenoid... cheers to you!
