Default 1990 Montero, help please

Hello, I am new here and new to montero also. I picked up a 1990 lwb montero with a 3.0 v6 and a/t a few weeks ago. The motor was out of it when I got it and many pieces are in boxes so it's been tough to get all the bolts and find when they go. I made progress from the bare block I started with. I'm having trouble locating the six torque converter bolts that go through the flexplate. (Besides at the dealer for $8/each and a week's wait) I haven't had luck finding the torque converter in the factory manual I have either. I have assumed the t.c. is bolted to the flexplate before the trans and engine are bolted together.

Any help to get me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Thank you

Sounds like you got a serious project for yourself. I'm pretty sure the TC needs to be fully seated on the input shaft of the transmission first. After that transmission is mated to the engine block and the TC is connected to the flex plate. You should be able to reach the bolts from below of the bell housing - turn the TC and connect each of the bolts. Unfortunately i do not have the full break down of this process for the '90 model of Montero. You can look at some of the YouTube videos on this topic. Here is one that may help and you can look others too:

Thanks for the response. I can't see how you get at the bolts for the torque converter when the motor and trans are mated. The mounting and rear plate look like they would be in the way. Do you use the hole for the starter to get at them? Also I could use the dimensions of the torque converter bolts if someone could provide that.

Most AT transmissions should have a removable piece on the bottom of the bell housing. This is where you can connect the bolt between the flex plate and torque converter. Search YouTube for "Installing torque converter to flex plate pt1" and you can see the process. It is on a different engine, but the same idea.

For a project of that magnitude I would get the shop manual with all the torque specs bud, It will save you a lot of time and money. Just sayn.

Thanks guys. I was just throwing it together and searching for bolts at the same time. It's my first job this big as far as engine swapping. Felt dumb but found that I put the thin plates in the wrong order and didn't get how the bottom plate went on after the motor and trans were together. I put the motor in and bolted the mounts in also started the top four bellowing bolts. Just waiting for my new torque converter bolts to come now.

2001 Mitch3.5XS I do have the fsm and it doesn't have much info on the torque converter bolts in it. Has the torque specs but not dimensions like it shows for trans stay and motor mount brackets for example.
