It was the cdi or "ignition module".Took out the security system but it didn't help. Noticed that when it was running at high RPM, the tach said 500 at most, then I remember seeing a line from the CDI box that said TACH. Part MD152999 or J723T interchange number

From my searches, I had the impression the security system was an aftermarket one and hack job'ed into place by the dealers upon arrival. But my 2000 Montero (regular not sport) looks to have the viper module but the wiring looks factory after that, like they integrated the system into the wiring harness. I want to remove it and just have the ignition wire skip going through the system (at least that's my theory) but this 2000 model's wiring under the drivers knee panel doesn't look like what was described in threads I read. I see factory manuals are available but for ~$175-200 on ebay. yikes. I'll see if my meager brain can figure it out with a multimeter. I'll report back eventually if and when I figure it out
