2000 MS Timing Belt Jumped, need advice
I'm new here. I've got 125k on my 2000 MS and I love the vehicle. It has run flawlessly until my timing belt jumped a tooth. I cranked the engine and no start. It tried to fire, but never did. Towed it to the dealer and they found some valve damage. They put it back together and it runs great, except it sounds bad with the clicking and tapping. Should I get the head rebuilt or what will happen if I drive it as is? I'll appreciate any advice. The dealer says about $1000 on the head rebuild (they send it out). I can do basic repairs, but I don't think I can pull and replace the head. The dealer said I was lucky that I wasn't going 60 mph when the belt jumped, as the valve train would have been totally destroyed. Thanks to all.
hello! you need to get the heads rebuilt. if valves are bent, i dont see how it runs great as you say, it should run bad at idle and mabey ok at 2,500 rpm's. i think its just a matter of time before one of those bent valves burn and break off and then that will destroy your engine. get it fixed as soon as possible.
I just did a valve job on my97 montero sportwhich took me almost a month (mostly waiting on parts) because my brand new water pump failed on the highway. i did i and i can tell you that that noise ur hearing is ur lifters (followers or whatever). All of my intake valve lifters were jammed in a collapsed position after jumping time and bending the intake valves. now if ur car still runs ur far more fortunate than i was and can probably just replace the lifters if u have good compression. If u want advise on how to do it urself just let me know
