My mom owns a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero limited and there's a problem with the 4 wheel-drive. Well, the rectangular box that is surrouned by 4 tires in the circle is blinking. Like, right next to the circle that tells you how fast you are going, well the smaller circle that displays if your driving 2H or 4H is messing up. It starts to blink like every 15 minutes so we have to pull over, turn the SUV off for a few seconds, and then its gone. The only thing thats blinking is the rectangle in the middle of the tires. Does anybody know why?

 

the light is flashing because there is a trouble code in the active-trac four wheel drive system.
you will probably need to have all 5 of the transfer case switches replaced, as the 2001 models were subject to corrosion and should all be replaced at once (even if only one has failed) to prevent it from happening again.
