OK. I understand your point of view, but I'm afraid that the car industry is such a global entity these days, that trying to buy something "American" is mostly an exercise in feel-goodism for lack of a better term. But I sure hope you get to the bottom of your problem and let us all know what it turned out to be as it may help someone else with a similar problem someday.
Sorry the Mitsubishi brand couldn't do it for you

same problem
Hello,
I just recently joined the forum and I am currently having the same problems with my 2002 Montero Sport. I have replaced the coil, replaced the spark plugs, spark plug wires, valve cover gasket, and tube seal. Also, I just replaced the camshaft sensor. At this point I have yet to figure out what the problem is. I have been working with several mechanics and could not pin point the problem. The last mechanic I talked to suggested the ECM unit. If anyone has any ideas on what the problem is or any suggestions please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jun Ramos

Suspect the power transistor if the vehicle is equipped and the coil. The transistor could be fatigued or shutting down due to too much current flow from a bad coil. Did you replace the coil? Dont just pull the plug wire off use a spark tester if you arent doing this already, just pulling the wire off can create a voltage spike and fry the coil.

An ignition control module is what I replaced on my wifes. Had it running like a brand new one again. I doubt it would be the ECM.
