Default 2002 oil pump replacement Montero Sport

My fiance is attempting to replace the oil pump on my friends vehicle. It has been a nightmare. After creating a tool via online help to remove the crankshaft pulley, he NOW is unable to drop the oil pan due to the exhaust system being in the way and/or other bolts in the bell housing. Is it necessary to completely raise the motor or is there another technique or secret he is overlooking. Quick! I need help before he cancels the wedding! This is our effort to avoid the $7100 engine replacement recommended by the mechanic. He obviously knew what a headache this thing is! HELP!

he really know to focus and 120% commit to his job.respect to him.

not sure on your montero model but on my 89 montero,to remove the oil pan:
1.of course remove all the bolt holding it
2.remove the oilpump head(that shower head thing)kinda hard bcoz tha pan is in the way.
3.play with the clearance until i manage to slide it through the tight gap

why on earth are you replacing the oil pump? I can pretty much guarantee that will not solve whatever problem you think you have.

Attempting to replace pump instead of entire engine at the expense of $250 versus $7100 shop due to 1)no oil pressure 2)top end tapping 3)shop thought it MIGHT be worth it ( but obviously they knew what a headache getting to the pump would be).

Still stuck at same spot.He still says the more he takes off the more stuff gets in the way. NOW it looks like he needs to take the exhaust and starter off! IS THIS right??? Just want to replace the pump since we have one and go from there. HELP!!
