Default 2003 Montero transmission grinding?

I've got a 2003 Montero Limited that I'm getting a grinding/vibration sound/feel after the car is good and warmed up (some times I have to drive over 100miles or as little as 20miles) that as I slow to 5 or 10mph I feel a clunk clunk and the vibration stops.
The vibration also stops when I place the transfer case in 4wd.
I've checked the front axle lockup mechanism and solenoids and they appear to be working.
Any body with ideas?

How many miles on your rig?
When was the last time you changed your fluids?
You may want to pull your drain plugs and inspect them for metal chunks.
If you see anything larger than shavings on the magnet, you may think about pulling the covers and doing a visual inspection .
Good Luck.

I'd check the vacuum lines going to the vacuum chamber on that front axle. Alot of times oil change guys will accidentally nick or break one and then it leaks vacuum, causing the 4wd to want to come on up front.

the car has 127,000 miles.
And I vacuum tested the front axle accuator, lines, and solenoids and they appear to be working ok.
