Default 2004 Montero, Questions!

Hello all. New owner of a 2004 Montero Limited here. Excited to see this forum. Of course, it didn't come with the manual (why, oh why, do people ever take them out of the car?). I need to know/confirm a couple of things that I have read in various posts.

Can anyone tell me..

Trans fluid - looks like Mobil 3309/ATF-4

Diff oil - looks like 75w-140

Coolant/radiator fluid - What is pref'd or equivalent to Mitsubishi coolant?

Anything else in particular I should look for? It's an '04 with 129k on the clock.

Thanks in advance for any info!

Tranny fluid: Only use MM AFT
(Here is a link that sells the goods...)

STM: FLUIDS | ENGINE OIL | TRANSMISSION | ATF | TRANSFER CASE

Diff. Lube: I'm running Amsoil 80W-90 Gear Lube

Transfer Case: I'm running Amsoil 75W-90 Severe Gear

Coolant: All weather Green is compatible.

I don't have a Gen 4 Montero, but am familiar with the Gen 3.
I would want to see service records of the vehicle.
Make sure the timing belt was serviced, and find out what else was replaced during that service.
When I did the 120k timing belt service, I also replace the water pump, thermostat, idler pulley, tensioner. (Some folks say to also replace the cam seals...)
Also find out how the rig has been driven. Make sure the transfer case selects all drive modes with no flashing lights on the display. Drive the rig in each drive mode is ensure operation.

Try downloading a factory service manuel from the web.
They are an amazing resource, and huge money saver.
Good Luck

Z-

Thanks so much! Been tough to track that info down. The rig is definitely super clean (not in a detailed sense, but in a always garaged sense). It has never been off-road (absolutely no nicks or scratches on the lower end of the suspension). That said, the car lot seller did not know if the t-belt had been done, so I will be doing that. Trans fluid has been changed recently(it's still light red), but the seller said it was done before he got the car. So, I will be doing that too (I can't confirm it is the proper fluid). Otherwise, it is tight... no vibrations, steering slop, alert lights, noise anything... I am pretty excited about it, and I think it is a good rig, but I want to make sure I get all the fluids filters etc. correct.

It's a dumb thing not to spend $ on now and regret $$$ later.

No problem.

Did you also post on expedition portal?
I think I just saw your post there...great story about getting the Monty!
You are going to love this rig! We do quite a bit of over-landing in our Montero, and can't say enough good things about the off road performance.

Congrats!

Yep, that was me... looking for info anyplace I can get it!

Yeah, I am very excited about the rig. I've got a couple of little ones and they are just about camping age (2.5 and 1 years old). I think this Monty will be just the thing when the time comes.

Looks like I'll be doing the trans this weekend. Dealer seemed nice, and honest but since it wasn't at a Mitsubishi shop - I'd be really surprised if it had the right stuff in there.

Thanks again for the info.

Here is a link to the step-by-step process on changing the tranny fluid:
(Look at the section on fluid replacement.)
The job is really easy with someone starting and stopping the rig while you monitor the fluid flow.)

Awesome! Thanks again. Nice to have these instructions.

I had a v70 T5 that had a similar process, takes a bit of time, but it is a good excuse to drink 4 or 5 beers out in the garage
