98 Montero Sport XLS 2WD radio volume **** just spins
The factory Infiniti am/fm cassette player in my 98 Montero Sport XLS has become annoying....the small on/off and volume control **** on the drivers side of the unit just spins, so I cannot adjust the volume up or down. the **** still works to turn the unit on and off, but no luck on adjusting the volume.
does anyone know of a way to repair this? I pulled the plastic **** off of the unit, and it appears to be in good shape, no cracks or other noticable defects, so I believe the problem is in the stem that the **** attaches to.
I've checked eBay to look for a replacement head unit, but only see the newer 2000+ Montero Sport units that include the CD player. My 98 XLS has the CD player seperate, mounted down below behind the shifter console.
any suggestions are greatly appreciated
Thanks,
David

Agree with your suspicion that it's an internal problem with the switch or shaft.
You don't list your location in your signature but here are a couple of craigslist ads that might help. Would suggest exchanging photos to make sure they have the right unit.

Another option that may be more expensive is www.msrecycling.com

thanks for the links! I am in N. Texas, so I will search the local Craigslist ads. The MS Recyclers site is another great option, so thanks again.
Was hoping for a quick fix without replacing the whole unit, but it seems replacement may be my only option
