This weekend i was working on my 2004 montero sport, i replaced the bearings, brake pads, and had the roters turned. I also changed the oil. During the process the vehicle was knocked out of AWD inside the car. After putting everything back together the car will not engage the AWD, 4H, or 4L. It sounds like it wants to grab but just whins a little and never engages. Does anyone know what might be going on. We did nothing to the transfer case, or drive line except change the front bearings.

nothing inside the transfer case can go into nuetral.
there are only 3 positions, and all provide forward motion.


I would look at what you did and backtrack.

 

I had this issue on my 02 Sport, but I was just trying to move the shifter to 4WD.
I don't know if it is the same for you but the dealer had to take my center counsel apart and put all of the rods and shafts back together since they had loosened out of alignment over time. The stick was stuck just above AWD and below 4-H, with no 4X4 lights and would not budge.
You may have to look again and backtrack as Manybrews indicated, mine was a spur of the moment thing and I had not been working on it.
