I recently changed the timing belt and waterpump. Car ran great and i have been driving it for around 700 km . But recently the car died on the highway and it showed the codes P0335 and P0340, It baffles me that both camshaft and crankshaft sensors go bad at the same time. Do these sensors use the same the relay perhaps? I doublechecked the timing on the engine and that hasnt changed. I appreciate any suggestions.

 

Can't imagine both sensors goibg bad at the same time. Most likely it is a bad ground issue or a wiring harness thing. At this point you can't rule out a bad computer brain malfunction too. I'd try tracing wiring connections and grounds first.

 

I looked at the timing belt and found the issue. The hydraulic tensioner went bad. I changed the tensioner and realigned the timing marks . Now the timing marks on the camshafts are half a teeth off in comparison to the crankshaft. Is that ok or do i have to align it again? If i move it one teeth wouldnt it be half a teeth ahead of the crankshaft?

 

When you set the timing, always rotate the engine over by hand 3 or 4 times, The belt will stretch a hair or two, and you might be surprised to see the marks line up perfectly.

 

When i start the car it runs fine for 2-3 seconds and then it stalls. It still gives me error code P0335 and P0340, crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. Is there a common ground for these sensors or something else they share with each other to work properly?

 

If the valve timing is out then yoou could likely get codes for both. The ECU is detecting a unsyncronised (corelation) pattern between the sensors.

The timing cannot be half a tooth out. Are you fitting the belt so it is tight between the pulleys on the camshafts?

 

There are two timing marks on each of the cylinder heads. One is used on bank 1, the other on the bank 2. Are you sure you got correct timing narks aligned?

 

The timing marks are all aligned on the cylinder heads and the same for the crankshaft. Going to change the sensors just to rule that part out.

 

Do you have pictures of your timing marks?

 

Car is running again finally. The problem was a bad crankshaft sensor.
