Blinking Orange 4x4 light on 2004 Montero Limited
First time poster, been lurking for a long time. Normally I see a topic discussed that helps answer questions I have and don't need to inquire further. Not this time...
Basically, got this vehicle in with no 4x4 complaint and blinking indicator light. Showed a code 33 (unstable voltage to switches) on initial testing so after some basic checking of the fuses and wiring, we replaced the 5 switches on the T-case with no improvement. Printed a wiring diagram and verified all power sources to T-case ECU and sensors, verified continuity from switches to ECU and vacuum to front axle shift solenoids. Checked T-case shifter for correct continuity in all shift positions. Not sure what we're missing, but there is no improvement as of yet.
Here are my questions, I noticed that the front axle is in the locked position with vehicle off, once the vehicle is started, the engine vacuum unlocks the "hubs." Is this by design, or is it a clue as to why the code 33 is present? The vacuum lines and front axle components are in great shape with no rust present and good vacuum.
Next and most importantly, how does the electric shift motor operate the transfer case? I have been unable to find any diagnostic information or description of operation for the actuator or it's circuit. I did take a DVOM and probe the connector to the shift motor and found 12V present when the vehicle is started, this seems to indicate the motor is getting current but I would assume there is some form of encoder signal necessary to move the shift rail the desired amount when the ECU commands a shift.
Last question for now, will the code erase itself once the problem is resolved or is an erase procedure required?

Was it something I said...LOL 90 views, no takers.
Still beating my head on this, having researched a bit more, I guess the code 33 is the focal point. Watched a video on this forum where a guy is grounding out one of the switches as a by pass maneuver. Which of the five switches is the code 33 specific to. Might be a start on a diagnosis... Maybe.
