Angry Blown fuse AC Blower

Hi everyone. I have a 1999 montero sport with a problem with the AC climate control. This is the one located above the radio. When I turn on the rotary button to high either with the compressor on or off, the 10 amp fuse is blown in about 10 minute. Also is blown when going from high to any other speed. I took the cover off and the electrical conector of the rotary switch felt very hot.

What might be wrong with this? thanks in advance for your comments regarding this problem I have.

Prior to the fuse blowing, does your blower fan seem to be working correctly. IE does the air flow and fan sound increase at each level. I don't have a Sport wiring diagram but if your fan is sluggish due to failing bearings or debris in the fan it will draw enough amps (especially on high) to blow a fuse.

Removing the passenger foot well "roof" and pulling out the fan assy should give you an idea if the fan and motor are seizing up. Another likely area of trouble is the fan motor resistor pack inside the fan body. However if the fuse only blows on high these reisistors are only engaged in the lower speeds so not as likely a suspect.

Hope this helps.

I did what you said, took the blower out, also did a cleaning and dusting off of all the assembly, lot of graffite particulate from the brushes. I'll try on any speed other than High and verify what you say and try to isolate the problem.

Another question. Do the climate control unit MR460301 of this 1999 Montero Sport is the same than the 2000-2004 models?

I am asking because on ebay you can see pictures and the 2000-2004 models are pretty much alike.

Also I found out yesterday that if I use any switch position other than HIGH, fuse is not blown. Might be the blower motor or a defective switch?

Check the resistance of your switches and see if the high setting results in an open circuit. Or just get used to driving around with the windows rolled down

I found out it was the rotary switch of the ac climate control. I replaced it with another one from a junker.

Thanks for letting us know. Lots of times we never get to hear the happy ending. Glad you were able to find a junker nearby, too...
