Default brake booster accumulator

I have 2001 Mitsubishi Montero Limited. Since last month, there is a noise(grinding or two squeaky)coming from somewhere near or in the ABS cylinder that is located under the hood near the switch box. The noise comes every few minutes. Sorry if i couldn't more clearer or the right word. I found on the internet that this shold sign of broking brake booster accumulator. Do you have anybody OEM part number for it? Is it the real issue or there is something else? Did anybody have simmilar problem. Thank you very much for any help.

This started to happen to my 2001 Montero 3 weeks ago. I'm going to bring it in to the shop somtime this week. If i find any info i'll post it up. I just wonder what would happen if this pump was to fail while you were driving and needed to stop.

There is a factory recall.
I too had mine replaced.
However, Mitsubishi only paid $350.00 and it cost me $482.00.
It must be replace at a Mitsu. dealer.
Check with Mitsu. to see if the recall is still in effect.
I completed my replacement last year.

Got that noise few month back, everybody I know said it is ABS pump broken and will cost almost 2k to fix. I got 2001 Montero, almost decide to sell or trade in the car, called dealer yesterday, told them the noise and recall and extended warranty, send the car to fix today, they said totally free. They asked me if I did timing belt yet, I said no, I thought time to change is 100K miles, I got 94K now, they said $650, since I already there and will leave the car for them, I just decide to have them changed too.

I just checked into this with Lewisville Mitsu here in the Lone Star State and they are stating it is now a warranty fix, not a recall.

It would be interesting to hear what other Main Dealers are calling it.

My sister has a 2001 that I think the accumulator is done.. its been chirping for some time and today she said the chirping stopped. she brought the Montero used in 2005. She said the brakes work ok.. But...
I just called Mitsubishi and was told the recall was performed 10/2001 and the accumulator has a 10 year warranty.. so that now puts the part out of warranty. Since I want my sister to be safe

My questions are:

Is is still safe to drive without the accumulator fuctioning.
If not, can a home mechanic replace it or is it a dealer only thing...

thanks

Default Brake booster accumulator

The recall for the BBA was long time ago. Unless previous owner ignored the recall, then it was likely already done on you vehicle. The dealer will only replace Booster once for free. Just order a new one from the dealer and replace it yourself. Make sure to put bunch of rags under the booster, since it will leak some brake fluid during the change. After that there is a procedure to "disable" the old booster. It is done by drilling out small hole in the old booster to release pressure. I think instructions come in the box with the new unit. Very simple and straight forward replacement procedure.
