buying a 2000 4x4 Montero
Good afternoon, I am looking for opinions. We have an opportunity to purchase a 4x4 Montero Sport for $2500. It has 170,000 miles on it. Green with tan interior. It is clean and gorgeous. Can anyone give me your opinions on owning a Mitsubishi? Love or hate? My buddy said they are expensive to repair? Any advice out there?

I absolutely love mine. Had it for over 16 years now. It is an '01 model, so I do not have experience with the 2000 model year. Repairs are somewhat expensive because there are not too many aftermarket parts. The OEM Mitsubishi parts are costly, but last forever. My #1 rule with doing ANY repairs on my Montero is NOT to replace parts, unless I'm 100% sure that this particular part had failed. This keeps the cost of repairs down to a minimum.
With an older truck like this, you need to be realistic - at first you most likely need to put some money into it. But it will most likely be basic maintenance stuff. Good luck.

I bought my 2000 MS XLS 4WD 2 years ago with 150k...it has close to 170k now and I haven't had any issues. As long the maintanence was done..these vehicles will run for a very long time. Only common issue with the 6G7x V6 motors is valve stem seals go bad which the typical symptom is you will blow smoke if you are at idle too long. Mine has this issue..but hasn't been bad ever since I switched to Valvoline high milage synthetic oil.

I have a 2003 Montero so I'm not sure if the engines are similar. However, check and see if the plugs have been changed. In the Montero, you have to pull the intake to get at them. That may be why their getting ride of it. Also, look at the struts and see if they have a lot of wear and tear, could be a sign if taken care of or not.
