I am looking at buying a 01-02 Montero and was wondering if there is anything that I need to look for when I am test driving one. I owned a 01 XLS a few years ago, but I may get a Limited this time. What lights come on when you start the truck?

 

Not trying to be a smart a$$, but your experience with the XLS will be your best guide. The difference between the two is minimal and just make sure all electrical items work. I never hear about anyone having broken seats etc. On the limited or any other 4wd, I would try to find one that went off road occasionally or at least one where the owner admits to using AWD in the rain. The blinking 4wd lights seem to be the biggest issue and most problematic for the trucks that stay in 2wd its whole life...

 

Get an '03 or later, for the 3.8 liter.

 

I just bought an 01 LTD and am very happy...except for the milage, but I knew that going in.

Pay particular attention to, and exercise all 4wd modes like tj suggests.
