Default Carrier Bearing

My 2000 Montero 2x4 has been shaking ever since I got it. Today I was up under it working and grabbed the drive shaft and it has like a good 1/2 inch of play and the rubber is cracked all around. Has anybody ever replaced one of these and if so how does the drive shaft come out. Any help would be great!!!!

I have a 2002 montero sport limited, had a vibration, was a loose wheel bearing in the front. I did the same thing you did and was "shocked" the there was so much play. I saw another montero same year and asked if I could check it out. same play. That is not a carrier bearing, just a guide. I posted that question about 5 pages ago and recieved no replies, which I took as a good thing since no one knew enough to make any comment. I agree that any play like that can't be good but it appears to be a common thing.

I have a 2002 AWD Montero Sport and it has a small vibration in it as well. I thought I would post and let you know that I too have some play in my driveshaft when moved from underneath...

JNR - did you fix the wheel bearing yourself? Any helpful tips? If not, what did it run you to have it corrected at a shop?

Hey Navyboy, can you explain the "shaking" you speak of??I am wondering if we have a common problem. Check out the fuel mileage post...I recall reading something about theTorque Converter Clutch(TCC) causinga "vibration".

I noticed the same play in the driveshaft, and the rubber support completely worn. My searches for the replacement part have yield no results, I do not even know what is the real name of the part or part number. Did any of you found a solution?

LOL I noticed that the mount is damaged on the bottom part (due the weight of the shaft) but OK on top. Since the part is symmetrical, I just turned it 180 degress and Worked!!!! No more shaking!!!. LMAO I got the new support on the mail already but will take more than 15 min. to change it. So for now, I have a smooth running car....
