Internal coolant leak and bad compression help
I just bought my lemon(didn't pass smog at registration) 1989 v6 MPI Montero LS with supposedly a 5 yr old rebuilt engine. Now I come to find I am loosing a lot of coolant( about a gallon per 50 miles) and did a compression check. Cylinders #2,4,6 were 170,165,170 psi with 7 to 10 cranks. Rising to about 90psi almost right away. This is where it gets ugly. Cylinders #1,3,5 were 210,140,157psi. I added a few sqirts of oil to #3 and it shot up to 180psi. I am hoping no one will respond telling me that #3 needs new rings. So a few questions.
1. Does #3 need new rings? Could it be a cracked head i think I lose oil too.
2. If I do the heads can I get away with not doing the rings on #3 cylinder?
3. Why is cylinder #1 compression so high?
4. I've done 5 head jobs over the years but never a block rebuild. I know doing the rings is a major undertaking but
is it a job that can be tackled by the DIYer? Do I need to pull the engine for that?
5. Where is the dang wire harness connector for the fuel pump. searched all over couldn't find it. Is it on the top side of the fuel tank? I didn't want to pull on those wires without a clear view.
Needless to say after I restarted the car, billows of white smoke came out for about 30 seconds and cleared away. Oh I'm only getting 13mpg right now.
Anyway thanks,
Peter
