Mitsubishi Montero & Montero Sport This sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.

Default Looking @ buying 02' sport, any problems

I'm looking at a 2002 Sport XLS with 65K. Dealer asking $8900.00. I don't know any thing about Mitsubishis, been driving Jeeps. Vehicle looks clean and drives nice. Any problems associated with this vehicle besides poor gas milage.

Make sure the timing belt has been recently replaced. Mfr service recommendation is every 60k miles and a bit pricey to have done.

The Sport has been a wonder vehicle for me and I have the ES version. Yours has the 3.5L engine, which I wish mine had.

Definitely go with Lunatic59's suggestion though and get the timing belt replaced if it has been done so already.

Welcome to the forums!

Here's a link of service bulletins. They charge for the detailed info, but you can at least get an idea of known issues cropping up. You may be able to cast around for a site that lists them for free, and bear in mind that I had to guess as to 4WD or 2WD. Change your link as needed.

Hope you like your Montero as much as we all like ours and we'll be seeing you around these precincts often...

Oh, and as far as poor gas mileage goes, I get pretty good mileage by replacing one quart of oil with Marvel Mystery Oil, using 5W-30 as long as your local weather allows you to do so, and I try an drive like the proverbial little old lady. I'm not in that much of a hurry to get anywhere, I enjoy the scenery and I just heard on the news that driving slowly and gently gives up to 33% better gas mileage.

If you want to race, buy a Porsche.
