Mitsubishi Montero & Montero Sport This sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.

Yes, your unit could be toast. What did the other test tell you? And if it was the fuel pump relay, I wouldn't guess low RPM, but it's possible. I would think the Idle Speed Control Servo would be the most likely culprit, but we'll await further results...

And of course, all comments greatly appreciated

If the check engine light is on go have one of the auto parts store read the code. I had a problem with mine rough idle and quitting, not starting for 15 and then cranked up and ran fine. My crankshaft sensor was not reading correctly because the seal on the water pump was leaking and coated the sensor.

My Montero Sport definitely doesn't lack power and there are no unusual smells or noises with the problem. Even performed a vacuum test with propane. Everything turned out positive.

An IAC is on order and should be ready to be picked up at Autozone tomorrow.

I put the IAC in yesterday and the problem still persists.....Im going to go back and try another coil. Perhaps I just bought a defective one. I will check the crankshaft sensor if the wind and snow die down....Thanks for all the replies!

You might try checking your TPS for proper function. It might not be telling the computer that the vehicle is idle and therefore leaving the IAC closed.

*UPDATE*
The new IAC valve works and the vehicle no longer idles low. Thanks for the help mothman52.

The TPS is the throttle position sensor. Essentially it tells the computer the angle of the throttle, and it also tells the computer when the vehicle is in idle.
Your TPS is located on the backside of the throttle body, closest to the firewall.

Glad mflippen's problem is solved, but had to reread this thread a few times just to see who did what to what...ha!

Gunterjaeger...do you have any reason to believe the coil you got is bad? What was the resistance you got between the low lead and the high lead? It should be about 12.1 ohms.

Ill test the coil again. Thanks for that info on the ohms! Does this montero have a crank position sensor? If so can you give me the location. Before I drop the bottom plates Id like to have an idea of where Im going. Also, please include the amount of turn I would have to give it. Thanks in advance.

HA....I forgot what year your Montero is. The older ones have it on the distributor; the newer ones in the front by the crank and aren't supposed to be that difficult to change according to other posters.
