Default Montero ABS issues

Recently, the left front spindle/wheel bearing failed on my 2001 Montero ltd. As I was 500 miles from home, I was at the mercy of a local, unknown shop.

They replaced the spindle, but have left me with an abs issue. When I first start the car, the brakes violently catch and release, making it necessary for me to pump them for control. after a short bit of time, the abs light comes on and the brakes work smoothly, albeit with no ABS.

Any hints regarding what is happening?

Thanks

No direct experience in this area but it sounds pretty likely that they messed up the wheel speed sensor when replacing your bearing - or forgot to reinstall it. I'd do a visual inspection of the mounting and wiring and pull it out to make sure it's not broken or blocked. If nothing is obvious then have a dealer pull the ABS error codes.
