Default 01 Montero Ltd auto won’t shift out of neutral

When backing up I pulled the shift to drive but it stopped in neutral and won’t move from that position. Any ideas what would cause it to freeze in neutral?

Will it go back into Reverse? First thing to check if linkage or brake interlock is OK or if something disconnected.

Do you have any lights flashing on the dashboard?

The center 4wd light flashes 3 longs and 4shorts

Transfer ECU error 34 - Free-wheel engage solenoid system fault.
Likely causes: free-wheel solenoid failure, damaged harness to free-wheel solenoid

Antilock flashes 2longs and 4shorts
1 long and 2 shorts
3 longs and 2 shorts
2 longs and 4 shorts

I can't find Montero specific ABS fault codes, but for a Mitsubishi Evo these codes indicate fault with nearly all four ABS sensors. With this many codes most likely issue is the harness damage (disconnect) or ABS control module malfunction.

Since your original concern was no shift out of Neutral - Does the Neutral light on the dashboard flash at all?
