when an car starts idling fast it may have a vaccum leak somewhere, I'd start at the brake booster, the hose that connects from brake booster to engine. looking for a vacuum leak is a drag, but a logical approach will help like making a list of what vac hoses youve checked so you dont go over it again and again.

also check, out the EGR, air filter and PCV they might need changing

hope this helps

As far asa repair shop...I am in Denver myself, but I haven't ventured away from the dealer (Quality Mitsubishi on S. Broadway is my pick) since I am still under an aftermarketwarranty till 101K.

If you hear of something cheaper than the dealer you should share!

A good way to check for vac leaks: (with the engine running) carefully take a can of starting fluid and spray a little on the vac lines...if the idle changes you found the leak.Be carefuldoing thissince theengine has to be running.

Pretty much what carlover626 said spray a can of starter fluid and listen to the engine rpm's change. Thats the best and easiest way to find a vacuum leak.

It could also be the ISC servo, my 99 sporthad the same problem idle goes high then low and to ap point where it stalls. changed servo then it is fine.
