Use tie down straps. Also if you're talking about 5 gallon gas cans with a screw on top made by Blitz, I've found they don't seal properly and as a result gasoline can leak out. When I tried one trip from California To Utah, with my 90 Montero's the gas dripped out of the can, down the roof and some went into the rear vents resulting in gas fumes in the passenger area.

The gas can's that I use now are the military Gerry cans which utilizes a cam door mechanism. It seals much more securely. You can put one inside you're rig and not have an issue with fumes.
