Hello all, i have searched the whole archive and did not find the answer i was looking for, i am about to buy a 02 Montero sport xls, and one problem it has is it idles high, around 2000 to 2500, the dealership replaced the idle control sencer and it did not change anything. Any help would be great!! Or should i not get involved with this vehicle, the ride is super clean, and has 122k miles. thanks in advance!.... Kip

 

Try adjusting the SAS (speed adjustment screw). It is underneath a rubber plug on the throttle body. Make sure the engine is at operating temp before making your adjustment and don't touch anything on the linkage or throttle plate stop screw.

 

It may also be a vacuum leak somewhere. This can cause a high idle instance as well.

 

There could be an adjustment on the throttle body to change the idle.

Is the idle erratic? Like bouncing up and down?

Pull off the intake hose, and see if the butterfly is stuck open a little. Sometimes things can get stuck there, or carbon can build up and hold it open, causing the car to idle high. It could also be that the throttle cable is a little too tight, or stuck.
