Talking My 1996 Montero knocking when cold

My 1996 Montero Ls 3.0 engine has been knocking since a long time when cold and it is annoying, when I first asked my mechanic, he said it is normal but still I just want to try and fix it. It knocks when it is cold from the engine and it goes away after like 5-10 mins of driving when the car is "FUlly" warmed up So is there anyway to fix it. Btw I use thicker oil like 20w-40 because it burns oil as it has 195k on it.
Thanks

Engine knocking can happen due to bad fuel or timing problem. That would be evident under hard acceleration or load such as going up hill. That sound is more like a rattling though. Check the timing as it should be about 6, BTDC static or with timing light on idle, now as for the valve lifter or tappets. It would be nice if you have a look and give a visual inspection as it could have a worn tappet causing the noise as sometimes the case hardening wears through, and then it wears away so quick causing your noise.

Okay sir so the sound is more like rattling than knocking but as the engine revs it goes away but when it is "cold" and on idle, then only the sound is coming. So how do you set the timing if it is wrong?
Thanks
