Mitsubishi Montero & Montero Sport This sport utility vehicle offers more size than the other Mitsubishi SUVs, but manages to keep a sporty look and comfortable feel, unlike many larger SUVs.

On the first Freeze Frame data you posted it said - "FUELSYST 1(and 2) CL", that is Fuel System Bank 1 (and 2) in Closed Loop. For most errors (Check Engine codes) the engine still can and will run in Closed Loop, but in others it reverts to Open Loop which is normally used on only at start up. Your P0125 code means engine takes too long to get to Closed Loop status (if at all). By itself engine being in Closed Loop does not mean all is well. You can have a vacuum leak and have fuel trim levels increased up by say 15%. In this case the engine will run well and in closed loop, but something is gong on there that needs to be addressed. Eventually under some conditions the fuel trim levels will go above set trigger level and you will have a Check Engine Light go on. Same can happen for negative fuel trims if say your MAF is dirty or a fuel injector is stuck open. The PCM will eventually find that stoichiometric equilibrium and continue to run. It will only trigger CEL if the values needed to get to the stoichiometry are too large (over +/-25%)

Understood so it's more important to pay attention to the fuel trim readings rather than wether it's gone into closed loop or not.
Thanks again hunter.

Tried to start the car this morning and it was extremely difficult almost like it was flooded? Once I got it going the idle was all over the place. I checked my OBD and it's not saying
CODE P0125
Fuel system 1 CL
Fuel System 2 OL
Load % 58
ETC 203
SHRTFT1 -1.6
LONGFT1 2.3
SHRTFT2 4.7
LONGFT2 12.5

RPM 2125
VSS 48 MPH

I cleaned the throttle body yesterday and maf and noticed my air was black and clogged up so I've replaced that today.
I've noticed my SHRTFT2 has come down significantly, I'm guessing this is a step in the right direction?

Thanks
Paul

Bank 2 is running in Open Loop (OL). Total fuel trims on Bank 2 are +17.2%. They should be +/-5% (+/-10%max). The values you see are likely defaults that computer goes to to keep the engine running. There is no active control of fuel mixture based on the O2 sensor readings.

I guess what I'm saying - you still have the same problem you had before.

Cleaning MAF, TB and replacing air filter would not hurt, but it doesn't address the issue you are having. All of those elements would have affect on both banks of the engine at the same time. Since you are having problems only with bank 2 (bank 1 is running in Closed Loop with good fuel trims), it is something else. I'm leaning towards some issues with the fuel injectors on Bank 2.

You said you had trouble starting and engine and it acted like it was flooded... Did it smell like exhaust has unburnt gasoline it it? Having an injector stuck open would result in a rich condition with negative fuel trims. This is the opposite effect from what you are having. It is possible that an injector(s) is(are) stuck closed and no fuel delivery (or very low) happening on bank 2. It is also possible that this is a wiring or PCM related issue.

Here is what I'd do if I was working on it:
1. Check signal to injectors on bank 2 to see if there is a signal and if there is a difference between cylinders.
2. If that checks out OK, pull the injectors and have them bench tested.

Thanks again Hunter it's going into my friends garage on Monday to get a live diagnosis on it. My gut instinct tells me it's a injector issue as everything you've said tends to point in that direction. The only positive is that the fuel trim has decreased so possibly partially cleared the blockage with the addition of fuel injector cleaner but not resolved it...

There was a strong smell of petrol once I got it running so so as you stated its a fuel issue. Thanks again for taking the time to respond hopefully I'll have a positive outcome for you next week .
Regards
Paul .

4 year thread bump!

im having the same issue, although my pajero only has the one 02 sensor.
everything is working fine, until im at a cruising speed. short term trims jump up to 25% and the 02 sensor drops to zero volts.

ive removed lower butterflys sealed up, changed maf, changed 02 sensor, replaced exhaust manifold, replaced fuel pump and filter.

i dont have tluxury of which bank is causing it.

did you ever find the issue if your still on here dude?
