Default P0442 on 2003 Montero Limited

About one year ago, several Error Codes came up one after another and I fixed them by replacing 02 sensors. But I could not solve P0442 (minor evapo leak - no, new gas cap did not fix it) and took it to mechanic. They said that they found evapo leak from a line above gas tank and they removed tank and fixed it.

Now the same P0442 came up again. Shortly before that I noticed was the gas mileage got drastically lower (from 20 to 12 miles/gallon) and I was thinking about another 02 senor job was coming.

Before I take it to mechanic again, can someone show me exactly where (and how) to check? I will try anything so any kind of practical advice would be greatly appreciated. I do not see or smell gas leaks.

Thank you in advance.

In looking for the evap leak, they run smoke through the system to find the leak. I have an 02 and and working on my leaks right now. I would start by removing the RR tire and the shield in the fenderwell. There are a lot of lines behind this shield that come in a large unit. Mine were all rusted through. Only the large filler neck remained and it had been spliced with rubber hose by the gentleman I purchased it from. Good luck.

Yes, that's the first place (rear passenger's side tire wall) I checkedbefore I gave up and took it to a mechanic fist time.

It looked bad. Plastic protector basically did not do anything to protectthese lines from corrosion. If I knew, I would have done something to protectthis when I bought this new back in 2003.

I was thinking that I had no choice but to bring it to a mechanic again for smoke test. Maybe I try chopping off these corroded lines and replace withrubber hose like I did to rear coolant line.

I just received Denso O2 sensors for bank 2 just to try out for bad gas mileage.

I was about to work on it this weekend, then my wife told me that CEL is gone.

It’s strange. Maybe the weather???
