Default questions from a prospective Montero buyer

Boy, late model Monteros are hard to find and so are forums, I hope I'm in the right place! I'm close to pulling the trigger on a 2006 with only 13k miles. I have a few questions for you guys, hope you can assist!

1. I've noticed some have the Mitsubishi diamond logo in red (which I like) and some in silver/chrome (like on the one I'm looking at). Is that aftermarket or did they come with red logos and what years?

2. The one I'm looking at has the DVD rear entertainment system, which appears to be totally separate from the stereo. I haven't gotten a straight answer from the dealer on if it comes with the headphones. Are these IR headphones readily available aftermarket? Also, what is the aux video / audio jack in the back for?

3. What are things I should look out for in terms of wear and tear (that easily break) and is the Monte know to have some things go out regularly or earlier than others (i.e. Pathfinders are known for bad cam position sensors).

4. Anyone know how many 2006 models were made? Doesn't seem like many, I'm having a hard time finding 'em.

5. Child seats - anyone have a kid in the third row? How does that work in terms of access (i.e. moving the seat up every time, is it a pain?)

Thanks in advance! :-)

I can't answer many of your questions as I have a Montero Sport and not a Montero but in North America I believe starting with the 2002 model year Mitsubishi "updated" the Triple Diamond logo by going to a solid (usually chrome) emblem from the red center version.

Welcome to the forums. As far as the chrome three diamond logo is concerned, at some point (I cannot remember the exact year), Mitsubishi started using a chrome logo on their passenger vehicles, reserving the red for their Mitsubishi Fuso range (trucks and buses, which Daimler has an 85% share in).

The DVD system is for rear seat passengers, and is separate from the stereo system. I'm not entirely sure about IR connectivity, but the jacks are located behind the centre console, where the rear passenger climate controls are located.

Provided these vehicles are well maintained, they do not fail. Just make sure to find one with a full service history. IIRC, this 2006 should come with the 6G75 3.8L V6 engine, although I'm not entirely familiar with the North American market, and this is a reliable power plant. That said, to be on the safe side, I would recommend doing some standard maintenance upon purchase: replace all fluids (engine oil, ATF, transfer case, differentials, coolant, brake), check the pads/rotors, etc.

Again, as I'm unfamiliar with the NA market, I cannot tell you how many were made. Although I know a lot of Pajeros were made.

As far as the third row seats are concerned, they are stored under the cargo compartment and are not that much of a pain to set up. Pretty straightforward actually, and to access them, the second row seats need to be pulled forward, just as it is with many coupe type vehicles. Hope this helps.

I own a 2002 montero xlt and one of my favorite features is the fact that i dont have to remove the car seats from the middle row, because you can use the rear door as a 5th door and my two sons, 7 and 5, can easily walk around the 3rd row from the rear and seat themselves. There's no need to climb over the third row, like in many other vehicle's with a third row or fold down the 2nd row for access.
