Default replacing 3.0 engine in 01 MSport (Calif)

picked up a spare montero sport 3.0 with near perfect grey interior last year, but after a few thousand miles it developed a knock in the engine. Its not loud, but then it is a knock.I towed it into my mechanic. They determined it was not a good sign and I shouldnt drive it.

So its been parked until i decide what my next step will be. I am not competent to do any mech work myself,so my mechanic said he can get me a used engine(from salvage yard) from a national outfit. Total out the door incl Remove mine and install salvaged $3500 roughly. That includes new timing belt, plugs, waterpump, thermostat.

Q-Anyone gone this route before?

The engines Ive heard avaiable ,have 160K miles & 170 psi and go as low as 140 psi and 180k plus miles

Q-Any Opinions on compression values 140 to 170 psi. I know the closer to the new engin psi (190 ?) the better
