Rumbling noise
I've got a '99 Montero Sport ES with a 3.0L......with about 73,000 miles on it.
When I first heard this noise, I thought it was the tires running over rough patches of road. It's a rumbling noisesimilar torunning over the "warning" ridges in the highway when your approaching a stop sign.
I finally narrowed down the fact that the noise happens between 30 to 40 miles per hour, when the RPM's are around 1200to 1500 and I'm lightly accelerating. If I'm accelerating rapidly (like getting on the interstate) it doesn'thappen.
There is a hesitation in the engine when this happens and the RPM's take a little dip.The noise stops if I take my foot off the gas or I speed up past the 1200-1500 RPM mark.
Any thoughts??

I have almost the same problem on my monty sport 3.5 mine is engine hesitation and a very recent check engine shows of an oxygen sensor malfunction..now i am having it checked which one of the 4 sensors, I got a quote for all 4, and it ranges from 100-200 usd each[:@]
I recall reading something about theTorque Converter Clutch(TCC) causinga "vibration".I posted this in the “Carrier Bearing†post as well.
Benchman - do you feel a vibration or only hear a rumbling?

I get some mild vibration/shuddering and I hear a mild rumbling. It's most notable when going up the on ramp (30-40 mph) onto the interstate.
The Torque Converter Shudder really sounds like my problem. The Flush and refill with the Mitsubishi SPIII sounds like a good place to start.

The Tranny fluid has been flushed (90K Maint.)atyet anotherMits dealer and my vibration is still apparent.
hello!! what you are feeling is torque converter shudder, caused by either contaminated fluid or the wrong fluid. it can easily be fixed by having a trans FLUSH done. drain and fill wont due. HAVE TO USE MITSUBISHI FLUID. no exceptions. it might take up to 100 miles after flush is done for shudder to completly go away, but you should notice a difference right away.
