Default SHOULD I BUY THIS 97' MONTERO SPORT?

It's an LS two tone with all options but the 4x4 which I don't need. Selling for $5,700.00 with 165k drives strong and A/C works fine, has the "chek engine" light on? What should I look for before purchase and can fight the price?

Thanks...

Find out what the code is for the Check engine light. It could be cheap or it could be expensive. Most chain auto parts stores will check the code for you for free.

Check to see when the timing belt was changed. Generally needs to be done every 60-80k. It is a pretty big job to change the timing belt. 6-8hrs.

Check when the plugs were changed a find out what kind of plugs were used. They need to be changed every 60 but you need to use the $10-15 douple platinums or they will not last very long. It is a 2-3hr job to change the plugs.

At that mileage the water pump will need to be changed soon too.

car fax is clean on this suv originated out of La and no bad history noted other than high miles and was serviced at 140,000 and sold at auction I just bought my montero and after running more than 30 of them thru carfax 2 came up clean so people be careful when shopping for used ones as the dealers seem real shady here in Florida.
