Default Sound in Neutral and Turn Signal

I was heading home last night and after using it once, I could not turn off my left turn signal. In a bout of ignorantfrustration, I switched my 96 Montero 3.0 into neutral while doing about 35mph and quickly turned 'er off and on again hoping for the insignificant chance that this would reset a relay. This of course did not happen.
My questions arethese: First,in that brief moment betweenwhen I shut it off and started it back up, I heard an odd sound like the agonizingnoise the startermotor makes when your brother in law or wife start your car when it is already on, almost between a grind and a hum, and I am wondering what that was. I have done this before in Toyotaswith nonoise. After Istarted it back up, all was fine. Second, any ideas on what is going on with the turn signal? It remains on no matter what position the stalk is in and I have removed the fuseuntil I figure it out.

Thanks!

can't help with the turn signal but my 97 montero sport does the same thing when you shut it off while moving. don't know why but im pretty sure the sound is the transmission trying to engage the parking lock. doesn't make sense but i think its normal
