They do not have the same name. One is Montero, the other one is Montero Sport. There are other brands that do a similar naming, however they are more of trim levels. In Mitsubishi's case they named the "baby" Montero - Montero Sport

I know for sure that full size Montero does come with all four types of drive (2wd, 4awd, 4x4, 4x4 low). I can't say for the Sport model (I own full size). I hope folks who have Montero Sport can weigh in on that issue.

I realize this, they did this with the Outlander and the Outlander Sport (RVR) which are big and baby versions of basically the same car.

However when you look at the "Montero Limited" and "Montero XLS" the "Montero Sport" they all look like it's the same car with a different trim packages when it's not the same car at all if you don't know the brand/model well it can be very confusing.. That's all I am saying... There's probably a reason mitsu has different naming for the car in the US and Canada...

I assume there's a trim package name on the Sport too but I guess having 2 words already people tend to leave it off?

Completely agree. Especially that in 90% of other brands that would refer to different trim levels of one model.

The Owners Manual does specify to use Premium fuel. When I just got my Montero Ltd, I used only premium fuel in it. Then some years later, when the gas prices started to rocket up, I switched to regular gas (87 octane) out of necessity. I did not notice any adverse affects in doing so - fuel efficiency stayed about the same, no knocking, no detonation. Over many years of travel (over 187k miles) I did not notice any said adverse effects at sea level or at 3,000-4,000 ft elevation. Still using regular gas

My Outlander used the verbiage "Premium recommended" I used premium a couple times and I noticed absolutely no difference. I had my scan tool with the knock sensor count on for the first few months and never saw it go above 0.

I wish they had gen 3's around here with manuals i do belive i have seen one before however it was not for sale.

Is one more suited for off road than the other?

again thank you for the info.

JP
the pictures in the links above are of a 2001 Mitsubishi Montero XLS /Limited Sport Utility 4D and a 2001 Montero Sport.
it can get confusing which, is which,

this is a 2001 Montero Sport

and this is a 2001 Montero XLS or Limited
the XLS has part-time four-wheel drive, with a two-speed transfer case and mechanical shift on the fly.
The Limited has ActiveTrac and is electronically engaged and splits torque in a more asphalt-friendly 33/67 front and rear in all-wheel-drive mode.

I love my XLS
