Default Takata airbag issues

Greetings from Australia. I am newly joined and have a few questions that some Montero owners may be able to answer. Firstly, though, if this is in the wrong section can the moderators please shift it to where it belongs, thanks.

OK, here we call them Pajeros but they are all but identical (aside from the LHD/RHD difference) to Monteros and it is the Generation 2 NL model that I am asking about.

We have a situation here, like in America, where there is a recall on vehicles fitted with Takata NADI airbags. The recall is voluntary at present but may become compulsory in due course. Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited (MMAL) are claiming that replacement airbags are not available and their only solution is to offer to buy the vehicle back. This would be done at the “current market value” which, as you can imagine, has plummeted as the vehicles look like being sanctioned by the various state authorities. This (sanctioning) means that, without a satisfactory fix, registration would be cancelled (or refused when it came up for renewal) and has had the effect of rendering the value of the vehicles to not much more than scrap. In fact, MMAL’s likely intention, with the vehicles they buy back, is to have them crushed.

I understand that the NHSTA has issued a recall notice and this refers to MMNA’s SR-20-001. In the former there is mention of a replacement becoming available but I cannot look at the latter because I don’t have a local VIN to put in.

Is it possible, please, for a Montero owner affected by the recall there to open up the Safety Recall and either post it here or send it by Private Message? I want to determine if MMNA are offering a replacement airbag (or even a replacement inflator which is at the core of the issue) as opposed to MMAL’s claim that there are none available.

Thanks,

Alan.

Thanks Haynes1701,

I'm already an active member there. I was casting my net for information a bit wider seeing owners in the US are affected but that the outcome there might be different to the Mitsubishi buyback which is the only option being offered here. Don't sell to Mitsubishi Australia and your vehicle will eventually be banned from the roads is one possibility being considered by various authorities. Being able to establish that replacement airbag inflators may become available in the US would build a case for Mitsubishi Australia to do the same here.

When the MMNA recall notice gets sent out, I'd be most interested to see what options are offered by way of rectification - hence the request for a copy of the recall notice.

Have any Recall notices been received yet? If so, can one be posted (or PM’d) to read, please?

Thanks for that. What model is it, NL, NM etc? Do they have those designations in the USA?

Currently it is the NL affected in Australia, but not all NL's just to muddy the waters.
