Default Tire Chains on a Montero?

so in some States where chains are required, they wont let you pass without chains... so if I were to put chains on the montero should I just put on rears? or on all fours?

Good topic - I just have one set and decided to put them on the front when the CHP required it. I figure its better to pull a car thru the snow rather than push it - front wheel drives do better than rear in the snow Plus you get the advantage of more steering control and better braking.

Ive read that this practice should not be followed and that they should be on the rear for 4wd. Never understood why - perhaps someone could explain.

when the car moves forward the weight is transferred to the back, so with AWD cars, the back wheels (with chains) grips the road/snow/watever, betterand puses the car easier and the fronts also have power so there is control, and a somewhat equal distribution of grip, i recomend all four for a saftey measure, if you can get tire with the spikes on them (like rally racin tires or ice road racing)lol

Ive read that chains on 4wd should be on rear so that if you need to emergency brake, you dont end up flying backward toward a ditch. Apparently its the same reason to put new tires on the rear first if you buy 2 at a time. Never considered that before.

Safest to run 4 chains, if only running 2, they go in the back.

carrying two cases of chains is such a drag, no more space for my camera gear, and camera gear cases are big bulky and heavy, I guess my grip will have to sit with the chains.
