Towing, how much can I tow?
I have a 2005 Montero LTD. Love this truck. I know it is rated for 5K pounds, but really, how much can it safely and effectively tow? I would have a good hitch, anti-sway and electric brakes installed. Thanks for your input.

I myself with would tow 1000 pounds unbreaked maybe 1500 and 3000-3500 breaked. I think that my personal limit would be 3/4 the weight of the vehicle with a breaked trailor. Some may disagree and tow the weight of the monty which is over 5000 but im not comfortable with towing that much weight. Also for a little extra power you could tow in 4h unlocked but not over 60mph.
Hope this helps
Also the anti sway bar really helps with heavier towing.

no it doesn't.
if your vehicle can't comfortably tow without it, then you're probably overloaded.
your vehicle will have a maximum specified CGLW or tow rating. (5k#)
this is a combinatiuon of downweight and drawn weight at the bar/hitch.
exceeding either rating is a) stupid b) dangerous and c) opens you yanks up to a world of insuarance hassles.
i've towed well over tow ratings on many vehicles, not least of which my current, pulling ~2T on a rating of 1.2.
the brake, steering, body, suspension &c IS NOT DESIGNED FOR IT.
automotive engineers are paid full time to work this **** out. trust them.

I agree with checking the tow rating of the truck...and you yanks obviously know more than I do about it.
Why do you think they make anti sway bars...to help sway issues!!! D.S...
Towing a small camper yeah I think it helps to have one and could tell a difference with out it especially on the interstate.
The greastest thing about forums is not to many people are experts "including myself" and are completely opinion formed. So If I were you I would consult your manual and possibly the dealer to get the correct. Info!!

the problem is when they're sold as a "weight distribution bar kit" or "load levelling bars" or some crap so people think that just because they aren't riding the rear suspension stops they can now tow over their rating.

Thanks for all your answers. The rig I intend to tow will come in just under 4K with with a weight distribution receiver a weight distribution hitch and electric brakes come on the trailer. Everything I read says that towing this should not be an issue, but if someone out there has experience I would love to hear from them.
