I just bought my 03 limited yesterday drove it about 20 miles in 2High, stopped and turned it off. When I got back in and took off "still in 2 high" about 1/2 a mile down the road the transfer case lights on the dash started flashing. At first while the 2 rear wheels were lit green just as they should in 2 high the 2 front wheels started flashing green. After about another 1/2 mile all lights on the transfer case indicator disappeared and the center diff lock light started flashing. I stopped and tried switching the gear from 2h to 4h, 4hl, 4llc, i could move the shifter but it would not indicate it on the dash the cdl light just kept flashing, so I pulled off the road turned off the truck and started it back up...all is good, and everything has worked fine since.

I had the same problem when I was in 4WD n used the brakes. The lights would get all funky on me and it still happens. I called everybody and no one knows how to fix it...Good luck

 

The issue is most likely with one of the sensors or ground on the transfer case. It indicates that there was an error reading by the computer. If you get the C/D light flashing, moving the shift lever will not perform any actions. Once you re-start the engine, it will clear and it should work. The issue will most likely come back again until the right sensor is replaces. You said that front wheel lights started to flash and then the C/D light started flashing and all green wheels lights turned off. It indicates that computer thought that the front wheels were engaging but did not get a signal that the process was completed. There are tons of posts on this issue for the DIY person, or you can have a dealer look into it. It is something that needs to be addressed, but not the end of the world.

 

Thanks hunterD I taking it in to have a diagnostic ran to see what's going on, I read some stuff about freewheel clutch selenoid but I dont wanna go ahead and order it until the dealer looks at.

Hey jhill15, if diagnostics showed that freewheel clutch solenoid (FWCS) is bad, just order that part and replace it yourself (its about $125). Repair itself is super easy - FWCS is located under air filter box (3 bolts to remove air box). Then there are 2 bolts that are holding the solenoid assembly to the body - undo those. Disconnect 3 vacuum hoses from old unit, connect to the new one in the same positions, bold the assembly back to the body and reinstall the air box. You'll be back on the road in 30 minutes and feel great that you did some wrenching

 

The dealer called me and said it was the front right wheel sensor. Cost after labor $400.
Oh and he also let me know i need
Lower ball joints
New gear oil all around
fuel sending unit
And vcg

 

I think is the same one HunterD is talking about, i've replaced mine back in 2007 and is super easy to do, $400.00 is too much for something that costs only $100.00

 

What does VCG means? Another thing gear oil all around, what are they trying to say by that.

 

Since this is a used rig, I'd suggest changing all the fluids...
engine, transmission, differentials, transfer case, and coolant to start.
Then move on to brake and power steering fluid.
(This is most likely what the mech. was implying in the above statement.)
New plugs and wires make a big difference as well...throw in a new air filter and you'll be looking pretty good.
How are the brakes?

 

Vcg: valve cover gaskets
gear oil all around: differential oil and transfer case oil

$489 is for the new speed sensor, spare key, and diagnostic to be ran.

If the speed sensor doesnt stop the 4wd lights flashing then I will change the freewheel clutch selenoid. The only problem I see which the clutch selenoid and vacuum lines is that the lines are really rusted where they come into the clutch selenoid. Another reason I will wait to see if the speed sensor fixes the issue is because the service manager said the t. Case ecu didnt record a fault for the clutch selenoid..."if thats even true idk I will just have to wait to find out"

A changing of all fluids as well as a tune up is in order for sure however im on a tight budget so it will be week by week process.
