Default Transmission interchangability question. Help!

Hey, guys! Here's a question for the wrench heads out there.

I have a 2001 Montero Sport XLS 3.0 with 2WD. My transmission is toast.

(Long story short -- I lent it to my brother-in-law, who drove it into the ground. The transmission cooler line popped, and he kept driving it...and driving it...and driving it, until it stopped moving. Burnt. Ugh. )

I'm cash-poor, and don't have the dosh to lay into a rebuild. BUT I've found a scrapyard tranny, dirt cheap. The problem is, it's a 4WD unit with transfer case, and I can't spring for it if it won't fit.

So, for those of you that have played with engine swaps before: How easy (or possible) is a quick-and-dirty swap using a 4WD tranny in a 2WD car? Are the trannys themselves identical? Is it a straight bolt-in and just leave the transfer case attached? Does the tail extension of a 2WD tranny mate up with the 4WD tranny without the transfer case?

I need to get this thing drivable ASAP, or sell it as-is. If anyone has any knowledge to throw my way, I'd be everlasting grateful. Thanks!

yep you can get the 4wd trans, just remove the transfer case and swap the rear end of your previous trans to the other and wallah!!!
