Default transponder key

First post - just bought a 1999 3.2 DiD Pajero but only have one key, local dealer says he needs a code to program a replacement but Japan (whoever he is) won't release them cos its a grey import, only option if I lose this key is a new immobiliser system (£300). Anyone else had this problem, any help would be appreciated.

i only had one key and wanted another. I just went to my local locksmith and he had the machine to program keys. cost me 85 dollars for the key and to program it. Took him like 20 min for the whole job. Now in the 02 montero limited... if u have 2 keys then all u need to do is buy the third one, cut it and program it urself cause the 02 models have an onboard key programer. Good luck.

Is it fair to assume this applies to the 2003 Montero as well - being able to program it myself?

THanks!

I would assume so. Should be in drivers manual on how to do it. I was told 2001-2006 manuals are identical so if the instructions on how to do it is in mine it should be possible to do it on any other model montero limited.

Fortunately my truck is too old for me to have to worry about smart keys so I'm not sure of the variations - but I did notice this article - perhaps it will help you?
