It depends on which one you're talking about. Some motors have 2 some have 4...are there any with more than that, perhaps 5? Anyway, there's an upstream and downstream. The upstream tells the computer if the motor is running lean or rich and will adjust the air fuel ratio accordingly. Then there's the downstream which only monitors the cat and that's it. The downstream does not affect motor performance, only the upstream.

To what silver said, but in a nutshell.
The O2 sensor basically sends a readout to the ecu/pcm/whatever about how rich (too much fuel) or lean (not enough fuel) your vehicle is running.
It bases these reading on the exhaust gases flowing through the exhaust system.
Obviously, if it detects a problem, it tries to adjust the fuel/air mixture to correct it, but if it can't then you get a check engine light.
And if the O2 sensor goes out, you also get a CEL.

Boy.... some nutshell.

My montero hesitates during acceleration after a full stop could it be because of a malfuntioning oxygen sensor?

A failing oxygen sensor should illuminate the Check Engine Light, has the light been back on since the dealer looked at it? As far as maintenance have you been changing theair filter/ fuel filter / PCV valve / spark plugs as needed?

I wonder if you just need to catch up on some maintenance items?

The CEL light has now been off but i still have that sort of mild engine hesitation during acceleration..i recently changed sparkplugs air filter is also good, what else could be causing this?

Parts here for a US version montero sport is hard to find i actually got the servo from australia..
