168,000 km service coming up.. Timing belt question
#12
If I wanted everything done - actual service, plus the timing belt and new water pump and tensioners, $1000 + tax. Around $650+ tax for the service and JUST the belt (no water pump or tensioner)

Actually that is another question..
I am trying to figure out if the 2009 v6 outlander engine 3.0L is an interference or non-interference engine? People have told me both.
Any ideas? Seriously, If I took a poll of the people I have asked, the answers be split right down the middle lol
Thanks,
Dave

IMHO...and if it was my car..I would do the whole thing. If you are planning to keep the car for a few more years..or more..then you have some piece of mind that its not gonna break for a good long time...ideally another 168KM.
I would think that the dealer would give you at least 90 days parts and labour on any repair...just ask....and if they are in any way decent they should do it right the first time..with the right parts and correct tools and technician.
I have had 5 Mitsu's over the 13 years they have been in Canada...the wife wrecked my 13 Lancer...but the others were very reliable and all serviced at the Dealer...never let me down or stranded.
I have never used local mechanics since I have been buying new cars over the last 25 years...so I might be a bit biased in that way. I just figure if they built it..they gotta have some insight on how to fix it...just my .03 cents.
As far as the accessory drive belt goes...may as well do it ...they are not expensive..the belt might be 60 bucks and probably a half hour labour..perhaps 120 plus tax..a pretty good ball park.. ..maybe less.
Let us know how things go..Good Luck!
PS where in Canada are you located?

you should also have the spark plugs done at the same time. they have the same service interval as the timing belt. Also while you are in there, replace the power steering and the accessory belt...you have to take them off to get to the timing belt...might as well.
when I did mine the first time, I didn't replace the water pump or tensioner. I'm at 177k miles and so far so good. Next time around I'll change out the tensioner at least.
I did mine myself, so cost was pretty cheap. Wen ended up using a giant prybar to hold the crankshaft pulley in place while we used an impact wrench to loosen the crank.

Where you live in canada? I'm a mitsu specialist red seal mechanic, I live in chilliwack BC (near vancouver), and work on mitsu's most of the time. Probably in Canadian fund expect to pay around the 800-1000 dollar range for a timing belt, tensioner bearing, hydraulic tensioner, water pump, possibly camshaft and crankshaft seals as well if they are weaping as well as a new serpentine belt.
