Default 18" Wheel Alternate tire size

Seems like there are slim pickings on 225/55/18's. What would be the best alternate size - 235/55/18 or 235/50/18?

Discounttiredirect gives you acceptable alternative sizes that you can then use to search around for a good deal. Personally, I'm a big fan of the General Altimax Arctics. For the price, it can hang with the best of winter tires! Availability this time of the year may be an issue but I've had 2 sets in my outlander and on my mazda6. There hasn't been a PA snow storm that has kept me from reaching my destination with ease. This is my 3rd season on the mazda6 set and I will likely have one more season worth of tread on them. I drive about 4000mi/season and I've driven them hard. I just love playing at the limits of adhesion going 30mph around a bend.
