Default 2005 Mitsubishi Endeavor Automatic Transmission Trouble, switches from "D" to "D & N"

Hello,
Have an issue. Went camping this weekend and the Endeavor had some Automatic Transmission problems. We went all the way back through some rough roads and river crossings and the Endvr was great. Had no problems, just sweaky belts from water hitting them. We parked and made camp. About a day later we tried to move it and had an issue. When switching to "Drive" the suv would stay in neutral. On the dash, both the "D" light and the "N" light would be on, being drive and neutral. This is when it would stay in neutral. I could get it to engage into drive but only for a short time, being 1 to 5 mins, sometimes less. Did this by reversing a bit or banging on the floor, but don't think that made a difference. Would sit there for a bit with it on and it would go from "D" and "N" being on then all the sudden it would switch to "D". It wasnt any jerking motion when it did, just smooth. When driving in "D" it would drive fine. Even tried to do manual shift when working in drive and it would kick from "1" to "2" without me touching it. If I just tried manual shift from neutral, would make a difference. The reverse works fine though.
Checked the ATF when suv sat for a bit. The dip stick showed no water in the ATF, no beading.
Needless to say, we had to get a ride out of camping some 40 miles on dirt road and have to go back to either tow or try to fix it. Any ideas? Also, it is "AWD", what is towing restrictions with this, flatbed only?

Did you figure out what was going on with it "D" & "N"? Mine is doing the same thing but the "N" is blinking on and off and slips when going into 2nd gear.
